IBM Champion Vladimir Bacvanski explains how the amount of data companies are dealing with is having a profound impact on how this data is stored and mined. He points to how existing technologies (eg. relational databases) reach the boundaries of what can be done and so open the door for big data systems (eg. NoSQL), which still need to integrate with legacy data storage systems.
Other trends include an increase of velocity of the creation of data eg. driven by social media and the wide variety of data types. In addition, there are now more complex relationships between the data.
